Ochre or Lavender

Guided visit inside the former Mathieu ochre factory, Roussillon
Option A
The Ochre Village of Roussillon

The former Mathieu ochre factory in Roussillon now houses the Okhra ecomuseum, its washing basins and calcination rooms open on a private guided tour of the pigment-making process. On site, the Cooperative des Couleurs runs a hands-on workshop where each guest grinds and mixes their own ochre paint, before the village itself, one of the most beautiful in France, built entirely from the colour it stands on.

2h30 to 3h on site15 min from the estateCapacity being confirmed
EUR 260 per guest
  • Lead guide from the estate plus a dedicated guide for the visit
  • The number of guests the site can take at once is being confirmed, a split into two passages may be required
The distillery at Les Agnels, the copper stills at work beside the cut lavender brought in from the fields
Option B
A Private Lavender Distillation

At Les Agnels, four kilometres from Apt, five generations of the Agnel family have distilled lavender since 1895. The visit opens on the estate and its history, walks the organically farmed lavender and lavandin fields, then moves into the distillery for a live demonstration on the two-hundred-litre still, and closes with a botanical tasting comparing the varieties side by side. The estate recommends the late afternoon, from 4:00 PM, to avoid the heat of a June day.

2h on site15 min from the estateBest from 4:00 PM
EUR 260 per guest
  • Lead guide from the estate plus a dedicated guide for the visit, audio headsets included
  • Above forty guests the distillery splits the group in two, a safety rule of the still room
  • Drink and local treats served at the close of the visit
The afternoon runs between 2:00 and 6:00 PM, both formats off the estate, transport covered by the fleet already at disposal for the weekend. Rates are being rebased on the way the group divides. The ochre site takes limited numbers at once, so Roussillon may run across two passages, and the distillery splits the group in two above forty guests.

Option A
Sunday Mass at the Abbaye de Senanque

A working Cistercian abbey founded in 1148, standing alone in a valley of lavender fields below Gordes. The Sunday mass is celebrated by the monks at 9:00 AM and a small party is received for it: an intimate encounter with a spiritual heritage kept alive on this site for almost nine centuries. There is no guided visit of the abbey, before or after, the abbey resuming its visits at 1:00 PM. The history and the context are given during the transfer.

Chateau de Sauvan, an eighteenth-century estate known as the Petit Trianon de Provence
Option B
A Private Chateau Visit

Raised from 1719 by the Avignon architect Jean-Baptiste Franque, the Chateau de Sauvan is known locally as the Petit Trianon de Provence for its restrained eighteenth-century elegance. Its gardens carry the Jardin Remarquable label, and the family who restored the estate hosts the visit themselves, opening rooms still furnished in the style of the period.

  • Owner-hosted visit of the eighteenth-century chateau and its period rooms
  • Lead guide and translation, the owner speaking French only
  • Entrance fees and audio headsets included

The morning is presented on two formats, as our on-site partner sets them out. The mass concerns a party of seven or eight, while the chateau takes a minimum of twenty-five guests and receives in the morning only. Whether the two run in parallel on the same morning, and what the rest of the group does, is being settled with the partner.

The oldest winery in the Luberon, producing wine continuously since the 13th century on the site of a Roman villa and a former papal residence. Vineyard walk, historic tour and winery visit, around a pairing lunch under the plane trees: a blind tasting of great Rhone Valley whites with appetizers, a slow-cooked main with the estate's reds, then cheese and dessert along the table. Each guest leaves with two bottles of the estate's premium wine.

Mines de Bruoux
Ochre Galleries · Gargas · 4:30 to 7:00 PM
Sunday Afternoon

A late afternoon slot, from 4:30 to 7:00 PM, ten minutes from the hotel: fifteen-metre galleries carved into the ochre cliffs over a century of extraction. The group walks the cathedral tunnels with private guides, and the visit closes with a blind tasting led by a private sommelier.

4:30 to 7:00 PM Two groups required 10°C in the galleries
How the afternoon has to be run

The site imposes two separate groups, and this is a safety rule rather than a matter of comfort: the galleries take 30 to 33 guests at a time and the operator will not run the full group in one pass. Helmets are worn throughout.

The two groups therefore go in one after the other, with 45 minutes between them. That interval is not dead time: the group waiting above ground is received with drinks and small bites. It does mean the afternoon has to be built around it, and it is the reason the slot runs to two hours on site.

EUR 280 per guest
Guided visit, blind tasting, private guides, sommelier & host included
What's included
  • Blind wine tasting led by a private sommelier, staged underground
  • English speaking host with the group from and to the hotel
Blind wine tasting staged inside the ochre galleries of Mines de Bruoux
Format
In the Galleries

The tasting stays underground at a constant ten degrees year round, warm clothing recommended. The two rotating groups of thirty to thirty-three take turns, with a thirty to forty-five minute interval between them filled by drinks and small bites.

Sunday · Recommended

The internationally acclaimed Beefbar, in the Airelles palace of La Bastide de Gordes, twenty minutes from the estate, is our recommendation for the closing evening. Privatised in full: aperitif cocktails at golden hour, premium cuts and refined sharing plates, Provence wines, and the valley of Gordes below.

Beefbar Gordes terrace layout plan
The terrace opens off the restaurant in three levels stepping down the slope, with the bar and kitchen pass at the top, long tables through the planted centre and banquette seating following the stone wall on the valley side. The aperitif runs on the upper level at golden hour, guests move down for the seated dinner, and the service corridors marked along the eastern wall keep the passes clear of the tables all evening. Final table configuration is set with Airelles once the guest count is confirmed.
